We were looking for a comfortable hotel in Madrid with unique, historic charm and Hotel Palacio del Retiro. We are so glad we did, as we had wonderful stay and cannot wait to go back.
When you walk in the door, your experience begins with their signature fragrance. I'm not sure what it is, but the smell is amazing! Check-in was so smooth and the staff was incredibly kind and hospitable. Truly felt like we were visiting someone's home when our check-in concluded with a quick tour and summary of the hotel's history!
The hotel is clean and fresh, and perfectly merges preservation with modern comfort. We were happy for the upgrade to the King suite, their largest room, but I'm certain even their smallest room would be impressive. The bathroom was modern and the rain shower was such a treat. Loved the luxurious robe and slippers, too!
Daily breakfast is 35 Euros and fantastic! An impressive cold spread, and also a warm breakfast option of your choice. I had a crepe and scrambled eggs. Perfectly prepared, and again, I felt right at home. Lovely cappuccino and juices. And there were many books on display in the restaurant for borrowing, included a few Spain travel books that helped with planning our day trip to Toledo at breakfast.
We returned to the restaurant for drinks and a late night cheese plate and dessert. Although we didn't get an entre because we had eaten tapas in Plaza Mayor earlier, the plates being served to neighboring tables looked delicious, and what we received was very high quality and delicious. Dinner service was also spectacular with the staff as warm and kind as we had encountered throughout the day.
And even more unique - the hotel includes a spa in the basement with a whirlpool jacuzzi, wet sauna, dry sauna, showers and warming lounges. They also offer hot tea. A wonderful place to relax, though the whirlpool was out of commission during our stay.
Finally, we found the location pretty ideal. We enjoyed morning walks in the park, close proximity to the Prado Museum, and a 20 minute walk to the Train Station where we caught a high speed train to Toledo.
A very special stay and somewhere we would certainly recommend and return. Congratulations to the staff for reaching such a high level of service.
