Although it is October, now is the time to plan a Christmas-themed trip, and my favorite family trip for Christmas Is to Washington DC.
As you know, from previous posts, I love a three-day trip, and that is all you need for this one, especially if you are flying directly into DCA. I always plan my Christmas trips to DC around the “Wreaths Across America” Saturday, which is generally the second or third Saturday in December. Wreaths Across America is the organization that provides for wreaths for veteran cemeteries across the country (through generous donations from lots of donors), but the biggest event is of course at the Arlington National Cemetery. Not only are the wreaths themselves very beautiful and a sight to see, but the event is a great opportunity to teach your kids about the sacrifice of American soldiers and their families. There are thousands of volunteers and it is very great way to feel connected with your fellow Americans during the holidays.
In addition to this amazing event, I love DC at Christmas because the hotels downtown go ALL OUT. I recommend staying at The Willard. It is next door to the White House, a good walking distance to the museums on the National Mall, and has the most beautiful Christmas decorations. They also have special Christmas events, including daily carolers in the evenings in their lobby.
Additionally, two magical events happening in DC that cannot be missed is Enchant, the winter wonderland set up at the Nationals Stadium (a light maze with shopping, ice skating, and food), and the Santa Suite at the Fairmont Hotel (a free event, but sells out quickly!). And do not miss brunch at the Ole Ebbit Grill to get some photos with their giant nutcrackers. Finally, make sure to visit the White House Christmas Tree display which includes miniature trees from each state with curated state-themed ornaments.
On top of the holiday magic, DC offers its usual benefits of an easy and affordable metro, free museums, and beautiful monuments. They also have a fun children’s museum (this one has a fee) near the Willard as well, if you have littles that need to get some quick energy out in their three-story playscape.
Have fun families!
That looks wonderful, I have attended some of the events and it was remembered as being one our favorite trips! A must see and do!
