This month’s Couples Trip itinerary is Newport, RI with an overnight in Nantucket, MA.
In my opinion, couples trips need to have a good mix of luxury (nice hotel and good food) and high exploring potential. Newport and Nantucket offer both! Also, this is another good 4-day/3 night trip – the perfect amount of time away from the kiddos!
Downtown Newport is super interesting! It is well-preserved from the early days of our country, and historic plaques + google make your average walk around town pretty entertaining. Pop into “Poor Judgment” for a refreshment during your walk.
The Trinity Church is my favorite building in town. Completed in 1726, it has held almost 300 years of worshippers, including George Washington. There is a plaque on the pew where he used to sit when he came to town. Jacqueline Lee Bouvier and John F. Kennedy were married one block up in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. On Day One, I recommend checking into a B and B, and taking a downtown Newport walking door before going to a nice dinner. My recommendations: Serenity Inn Newport and Rhode Island Red Food Tours.
Day Two of this itinerary requires your walking shoes and a sense of adventure. After enjoying a delicious breakfast at the Inn, hop in an Uber and have them drop you off at the edge of the Cliff Walk. Read all about it here before undertaking: http://www.cliffwalk.com. In the afternoon, tour The Breakers Mansion, Newport Rhode Island, and Marble House Mansion, Newport, RI. You will be blown away! Grab a quick lunch at the Garden Cafe at the Breakers. End your day at Castle Hill Inn for dinner and drinks while you watch the sailboats. Make a reservation!!
Day Three, it is time to get moving. After another delicious breakfast, pack up and head to Hyannis to catch a Hy-Line ferry to Nantucket. The ferry runs many times through the day and takes about an hour. Booking ferry tickets ahead of time will give you comfort during the high season. As you pull out of Hyannis, check out the Kennedy Compound on your right.
When you get to Nantucket, enjoy a self-guided walking tour downtown, and grab a lobster roll for lunch. Check into your hotel, I recommend Nantucket Hotel & Resort, but you really can’t go wrong because they are all $$$$ (that’s why we are only staying one night!!). After check-in, grab a rental bike (there are lots of companies that deliver to your hotel) and head out to Madeket Beach (A pretty good ride, so only if you’re up for this type of adventure). Park your bike at Millies Madaket Beach Nantucket and visit their general store for some drinks and a cool sweatshirt, before heading for the beach. Find a good piece of driftwood and soak it all in! Have an early dinner at Millie’s so long as you’ve got enough light to make the ride back to town! If you’re staying at the Nantucket Resort and Spa, end the night on their wrap-around porch, and if you’re still hungry, their restaurant is very good.
Day Four: An early morning walk out to the lighthouse that greets you as you enter the island is a great way to start the day. Explore the marina and do some souvenir shopping downtown. Finally, cry as you ferry back to the mainland (or at least that’s what I did)!
